Helping Flood Victims in San Angelo

This trip was a little bit unique since I got to help out with Samaritan’s Purse in Texas. They generally get many volunteers locally and there are not many disasters near where I live. They were low on volunteers and it was also within a 12 hour drive. A small team from my church decided to drive out and help out for a week.

San Angelo was impacted by the same flood as Kerrville, but they got a lot less support since most the media was focused on Kerrville. Even a month after the flood there were many families struggling to get help to eliminate the water and mold from their house. We were working on the ‘clean up phase’, which meant pulling out destroyed drywall and flooring, killing the mold, and patching water leaks. Next the ‘rebuilding phase’ will start where the families will get their house put back into normal condition.

It was really nice to work with another organization to get a different point of view. The homeowners we worked with were very appreciative of Samaritan’s Purse staying there to help them out. It’s a great organization to volunteer with. I’ll be looking for additional opportunities with them!
